Tavily vs Parallel (2026): Web Search APIs for AI Agents

I compare Tavily and Parallel as web search APIs for AI agents: free tiers, credit and per-request pricing, MCP servers and open source status.

By agentools

Short answer

Pick Tavily if you want a simple credit-based search API with 1,000 free credits a month and plans from $30. Pick Parallel if you make many requests and want per-request pricing with up to 5,000 free requests a month, plus deep research tasks. Both have an official MCP server and both APIs are closed source.

  • Tavily: Simple credit pricing and a free monthly allowance
  • Parallel: High request volume and deep research tasks

An agent that cannot search the web is stuck with whatever its model already knows. Tavily and Parallel are two APIs built for that job: they return search results and page content shaped for an LLM, not for a person scrolling a results page.

The main differences are pricing and scope. Tavily sells credits, where a basic search costs 1 credit, and adds extract, crawl, map and research endpoints. Parallel prices per request rather than per token and adds a Task API for longer research jobs. Every number below comes from the vendors' pricing pages and docs, checked on October 30, 2026.

The 2 picks

1. Tavily

Real-time web search API for AI agents

Tavily is a real-time web search API for AI agents. The free Researcher plan gives 1,000 API credits per month with no credit card. After that, pay as you go is $0.008 per credit, or monthly plans: Project $30 for 4,000 credits, Bootstrap $100 for 15,000, Startup $220 for 38,000 and Growth $500 for 100,000. Enterprise is custom. A basic search costs 1 credit and an advanced search costs 2. Students can use it for free.

Tavily's MCP server runs remotely at https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/ with OAuth or an API key, and includes search, extract, crawl, map and research tools. In Claude Code:

claude mcp add tavily --transport http https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/

To run it locally, use npx -y tavily-mcp@latest. The tavily-mcp package is MIT licensed.

Caveat: the API is closed source, and advanced searches and crawls use more credits, so heavy research agents burn through the free 1,000 quickly.

Pricing: Free tierAPI

2. Parallel

Web search and deep research APIs for agents

Parallel offers web search and deep research APIs for agents, priced per request instead of per token. You get up to 5,000 free requests per month plus $5 in free credits each month, and up to $80 in credits at signup. Qualified startups can apply for up to $250.

After the free allowance, the Search API is $1 to $5 per 1,000 requests (10 results each) and Extract is $1 per 1,000. The Task API, for longer research jobs, runs from $5 to $2,400 per 1,000 requests depending on the processor. Parallel states SOC 2 compliance.

Parallel's MCP server lives at https://mcp.parallel.ai/mcp. Search, fetch and quick decision tools work without a key at lower rate limits, while deep research needs OAuth or an API key. In Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http parallel https://mcp.parallel.ai/mcp

Caveat: the platform is closed source, though its search MCP repo on GitHub is MIT. Task API costs range widely by processor, so pick the cheapest one that gives good answers.

More to consider

Which one should you choose?

I would pick Tavily for a first agent or a small product: 1,000 free credits a month, clear credit costs per call and a $30 plan when you outgrow it. Its extract, crawl and map tools cover most research agents without another service.

I would pick Parallel when request volume is high, because per-request pricing and up to 5,000 free requests a month go a long way, or when I need long research jobs through the Task API. Its MCP server is also easy to try because the search tools work without a key.

If you need ready-made scrapers for specific sites rather than general search, look at Apify as well.

How I checked these numbers

I read the Tavily credits and pricing docs, parallel.ai/pricing, both MCP docs and the GitHub licenses on October 30, 2026. Search API prices change often, so confirm them before you commit.

Questions

Is Tavily free?

Tavily has a free Researcher plan with 1,000 API credits per month and no credit card. A basic search costs 1 credit, so that is up to 1,000 basic searches a month. Students can use it for free.

How much does Parallel cost?

Parallel prices per request. The Search API costs $1 to $5 per 1,000 requests and Extract costs $1 per 1,000. You also get up to 5,000 free requests and $5 in free credits each month.

Do Tavily and Parallel have MCP servers?

Yes. Tavily runs a remote MCP server at mcp.tavily.com/mcp/ with OAuth or an API key. Parallel runs one at mcp.parallel.ai/mcp, where search tools work without a key and deep research needs a key or OAuth.

Are Tavily or Parallel open source?

No. Both APIs are closed source. Their MCP servers are open: the tavily-mcp package and Parallel's search MCP repo are both MIT licensed.

Which is better for deep research agents?

Both have a research option. Tavily includes a research tool in its MCP server and charges credits per call. Parallel has a Task API priced from $5 to $2,400 per 1,000 requests by processor, so it scales from quick lookups to long research jobs.
