Perplexity SPACE

Self-hosted sandboxes that run agent code in isolated Firecracker microVMs

About

Run your agents' code on your own infrastructure

SPACE is for teams that ship coding or browsing agents and want E2B style sandboxes without sending code to a third party. A template defines the starting environment, a sandbox is a running copy with its own VM, and several commands can run in the same sandbox. Lifecycle calls are async (you poll an operation ID) and command output streams over server sent events with a session scoped token. Warm pools and base snapshots keep creates fast, and operator egress profiles control what a sandbox can reach. The reference setup runs on Kubernetes (a local Kind cluster for trying it), so this is infrastructure for builders, not a one click app. Written in Rust, Apache 2.0, open sourced by Perplexity in October 2026, with hosted guide and API docs at space.docs.perplexity.ai.

Features

  • Firecracker microVM per sandbox
  • HTTP API with streamed command output
  • Pause, suspend and wake sandboxes
  • Warm pools and base snapshots for fast starts
  • E2B compatibility wrapper
  • Egress profiles to control network access
